What is the reason for the fin at the bottom of the pole mount?
The fin shown at the bottom of the pole mount is an anti-rotation fin to prevent the mount from turning after installation. The end of the mount with the fin is buried in your concrete foundation. A straight pole mount without some type of fin would have a higher risk of moving over time, as high winds blow on the Starlink antenna.
Have a question about the construction of this. Can you tell me what material is and if it's painted/powder coated/etc.
The material is American made steel and the pole mount is hot dip galvanized after fabrication. This will provide greater long term protection vs. paint or powder coating.
Do you see any reason I couldn't use this as a deck mount? We have to install a starlink dish at the edge of a dock. My plan is to use the 'fin' at the bottom and bolt that to a post (it looks like there are two holes), and then use the upper holes to fasten higher up on the dock for support. So there will be lower fasteners and upper fasteners.
If you are mounting this to a deck, we would recommend using either the Baird Starlink Long Wall Mount or the Baird Starlink Short Wall Mount. Each of these options would mount easily to a 4"x4" deck or dock post. If you follow either of the above links, there are pictures of the mounts on 4"x4" posts to give you an idea if it will work for your site.
Interested in installing my Starlink up higher and thought this might be an option to get it much higher than roof line - suggestions?
We would not recommend mounting in in ground pole mount directly to the side of a structure. If you were trying to get above the roof line a possible option would be the Baird Starlink Angle Wall Mount. This mount will give you multiple attachment points to your structure and U-bolts for securing a 2.37" pipe. You could source the length of pipe you need from a local store.
Another option would mounting on the peak of your roof line with the Baird Starlink Roof Mount or going with an even larger non penetrating base with the Baird Starlink Large Roof Peak Mount that will allow you to mount your Starlink antenna up to 8' above your roof peak.
